Poker

Poker is not just a game of chance; it is often a complex strategy in which every detail matters. The unique language of poker is one of the key elements that defines the essence of the game. Experienced players often use this language to communicate at the table, including not only characteristic phrases and terms.

In this article, we will look at both more informal poker terms and official words used in the rules. If you know the language of poker, you will not only be able to better understand the game, but also feel more confident when playing live or virtual games.

Poker language: official terms Most of the words used below come from Texas Hold’em, which is currently the most popular type of poker and is considered the classic form of the game.

When players play preflop poker, when the community cards are not yet visible, they bet using their pocket cards — the first cards they received when the hand was dealt.

The flop is the stage when the dealer reveals three identical cards and makes another round of bets.

The turn is the moment when the fourth community card appears. This is followed by another round of betting.

The final stage is called the river. At this stage, players receive a fifth community card on the table, then evaluate the combinations they have received and conduct a final round of betting.

The flop, turn, and river are the stages of poker after the flop, when community cards are dealt.

The showdown is when opponents reveal their best combinations to each other, and the best one wins the pot. This only happens if there is more than one player left after the river.

Raising bets is an action in poker called a raise.

A raise means increasing the previous bet.

A call is a reduction of an opponent’s bet.

If no bets have been made in the current round, you can use a check.

Discarding cards and leaving the hand is called folding.

Limping is matching the big blind bet instead of raising it.

All-in is a bet of all of a player’s chips. Other names for this action are “push” and “va-bank.”

In poker, the first (voluntary) bet of the round is called the ante.

An ante is a small bet that must be made before the start of the game in some types of poker (e.g., stud poker) and in the later stages of tournaments.

Before the cards are dealt, the first two players to the left of the dealer make a “blind” bet. There are big and small blinds.

A donk bet is a bet against a player who has chosen an aggressive strategy in the previous betting round.

A continuation bet is a bet that a player makes after raising their bet preflop.

An overbet is a bet that exceeds the size of the pot.

A c-bet is a bet when a player raises preflop and continues to play aggressively postflop.

Poker language uses informal terms and slang. One type of poker player is a fish, which means an amateur or weak player.

Tight poker is a cautious style of play where the player waits a long time for the best card to play.

Loose style requires a large number of hands. It is the opposite of tight.

Nit is the tightest style of play.

Poker slang is to go all in and bet everything.

If your opponent goes all in, you can call them.

A barrel is a sequence of bets, often significant, on the postflop. “Bet three barrels,” for example, means that the player bet on all three stages of the game (streets).

Staking means to match an opponent’s bet.

To fold means to pass.

A stack includes chips for one player.

The player with the largest stack is called the chip leader.

A short stack is a player with a small stack.

Stealing is a method of raising from late positions in order to get the blinds or the pot, i.e., a small bet preflop to take the chips in the pot. The term comes from the word “steal,” which means “to take.”

Restyling is an attempt to prevent another player from stealing by using an all-in bet.

A positional bet is a bet after whose last move. A bet from any other player is called an out-of-position bet. However, it is important to remember that most pots are contested between only two opponents; as a result, one often plays in position and the other out of position.
